Strandbeest, the kinetic sculptures that move like animals

Strandbeest means ‘Beach Beasts’ in Dutch. Artist Theo Jansen has been occupied creating these new forms of ‘life’ since 1990. He constructs amazing kinetic sculptures/skeletons from plastic yellow tubes that appear to ‘walk’ on the wind. And they don’t use electricity!

The skeletons look like they are alive! They crawl, walk and basically mimic the movements of animals like a caterpillar or an elephant. The structures have parts that resemble to human muscles and nerves, which allow them to react and respond to surroundings.

If you happen to be in the Netherlands, Jansen’s next exhibition will be held at the Museum Prinsenhof Delft in November.

An open-air hotel room in the Alps

Open-air hotel room 2

After creating a hotel room out of a nuclear shelter, this time conceptual artists (and twin brothers) Frank and Patrik Riklin partnered with hospitality professionals to create an open-air hotel bedroom in the Swiss Alps. The room is again part of the Null Stern Hotel and has no walls or ceiling! It is managed by the local residents, whatever that means… The bed is fully booked for the 2016 summer season, but you can reserve for the 2017 summer season! (info@nullsternhotel.ch)

Pop-up with Comic Sans joke

betype

This newsletter pop-up from Betype made me laugh! I love it when humor is used in boring things like a pop-up, or an ‘Error’ page, or a ‘Terms & Conditions’ page. The graphic designers will probably get the joke. For the rest of you, I have to explain that ‘Comic Sans‘ is a font that everyone loves to hate! Most trained designers find it horrible, but at the same time you see it used everywhere, often inappropriately. The child-like handwriting font is so infamous, there is even a movement to try to ban it! Check out also Comic Sans Criminal, a ‘rehabilitation’ site that “helps people like you, learn to use Comic Sans appropriately”!!

Kenzo perfume ad by Spike Jonze

At the moment, I see this perfume ad everywhere on the internet. And of course it would be, because it is absolutely crazy and fabulous. It features actress and dancer Margaret Qualley performing an unexpectable choreography for the new ad for KenzoWorld. It is directed by Spike Jonze, the director of the absurdly hilarious film “Being John Malkovich”.

But Jonze has done this sort of thing before. Maybe some of you remember the excellent music video he directed for Fatboy Slim called “Weapon of Choice”, back in 2000 (see video below), starring a groovy, tap-dancing Christopher Walken. Very similar to the Kenzo ad and personally, one of my favorite music videos.

This post is dedicated to our recent family road-trip in our neighboring country.

In August we travelled to Italy with our car and the three girls. Fortunately we came back before the earthquake! For 20 days, we went mostly around Tuscany, visited more than 25 cities/towns/villages, stayed in 6 different apartments/airbnb rooms/towers, plus two nights on the boat, took thousands of photographs (including the photos from the girls’ cameras), ate a lot of pasta, pizza and gelato, had many espressos and cappuccinos, drank a lot of good red wine and basically had a great Italian experience! I posted a selection of our photos here.

The kids behaved and put up with our ‘boring’ programs to see yet another medieval village or church. Their highlights was the boat trip, seeing wild deer near a forest, seeing animals in a farm outside Florence, taking photos of cute doggies, visiting huge wine barrels in a winery, finding a shop dedicated to chocolate together with visiting a real chocolate factory (Baci), and of course eating gelato, every, single, day.

The above photos are just a tiny selection showing the two extremes of our trip: Beautiful postcard-like Tuscan landscape, but also the hoards of people from all over the world in Pisa, Florence and wherever it was considered “touristic”.

That’s it. Now all we need is a holiday to rest!
