I love the vintage heroes of Alex Gross, a visual artist from Los Angeles, California. In his – mixed media – Heroes series, he paints over old photographs, transforming the characters into superheroes or iconic characters from pop culture like Batman, Wonder Woman, Marge Simpson or Star Wars characters.
A cute little typo animation created for an international label and package printing event by Matthew Buchanan, a designer and typographer from New Zealand.
I could talk about the design of the packaging for these snacks, but this time I will focus more on the actual snack and not the packaging (which is not bad either)!
These are Jimini’s edible insect snacks! Insects like grasshoppers, crickets and mealworms! The above packaging is actually for grasshoppers flavored with Greek spices (a la Grecque)!!! All of Jimini’s insects are manufactured at specialised farms in the Netherlands and then flavoured in France.
Apparently there is a market for these, because they have made an effort to create an attractive packaging… There was even a Kickstarter event for Jimini’s energy bars made with cricket flour. Maybe you would like to consider them if you have kids?
Veronica Ettedgui is a Venezuelan-based artist and illustrator who decided to “show” her love for all her interests like comics, cooking, cycling or piano, by taking pictures of compositions that form the letters L-O-V-E. Very creative!
Love And Self-Love: One of the oddest things we need in order to love is a vital ingredient known as self-love. Another great animated short by the The School of Life.
Conbox is a great looking electric fan, that can be taken apart, when not in use and stored in its bottom part. (via)
What would a shipping company’s fashion label look like? It would probably look like Serapis.
Dear Photograph, letting go of my mother’s hand on the first day of school was always the hardest.Liz
Dear Photograph, I thought Dad never took a picture of me, ever. Then I noticed his reflection in the glass.Gregg
Dear Photograph, remember when you had to come home when the streetlight came on? Where are the good old days when the neighborhood was full of kids outside playing tag, hide-and-seek, and Wiffle ball? Those were the kick-the-can fun times!Linda
Dear Photograph, at the time it was not common for a man to walk behind a pram. I’m so proud of my father.Eva
Dear Photograph, why did we watch TV so close’ – Simon
The idea is simple: hold a picture from the past in the place where it was photographed and take a picture of the picture. Add a caption to explain the meaning it has for you and you may be part of a collection of thousands of other moments traveling back in time. So many actually, that the creator decided to turn them also into a book. Digital nostalgia of the highest order!
Yesterday, we watched the excellent animated film “The Red Turtle” together with the kids, shown as part of the Athens International Film Festival.
The film tells the story of a man washed up on a deserted island populated only by turtles and crabs. Everything changes when, in an effort to escape the island, he meets a red turtle. It’s a really great film, for both adults and kids. It has no dialogues but that was no problem, it was actually a plus for our youngest daughter. The film touches on all the major life stages: life, death, rebirth, family. The direction, the animation and the watercolors are magical. The film is a co-production of the famous Studio Ghibli (of Totoro) and directed by Dutch-British animator Michaël Dudok de Wit.
Now, this is something that combines my search for new and interesting ways to empower our young daughters to feel more confident of themselves, and also my love for design and lettering.
Kazoo is “a magazine for girls that inspires them to be strong, smart, fierce and, above all, true to themselves” as the creators say. In a time that TV and tablets are taking over the free time of young kids, it’s really encouraging to hear that a cool new magazine for girls aged 5-10 years is out. The founder, Erin Bried (a former magazine editor), thought of the concept out of the need to find a cool magazine for her daughter, that doesn’t only tell girls how to look or act. Bried launched Kazoo after a very successful Kickstarter campaign and the first issue was just printed this summer and is already sold out! All of their stories are either developed or inspired by top female artists, explorers, scientists, chefs, athletes, activists and writers. How inspiring is that for little girls?
Design wise for the first issue, Bried has used a selection of the best illustrators and letterers around. Mary Kate McDevitt has done all the lettering on the cover and some very nice lettering illustrations for inside. Illustrator and designer Libby Vander Ploeg has also created some beautifully illustrated maps. I can’t wait to look inside! I am thinking of subscribing for my daughters, but I will end up keeping the magazine for myself! Unfortunately the shipping costs from the US are too high, hopefully I will find a way!
Amazing colors and photography!
